The Night I Met Pete Townshend

This is a funny poem about meeting Pete at La Jolla Playhouse during the June 2001 benefit weekend .

Positively mod I was although I almost missed my flight
Eagerly went and spent gobs of money I shouldnt have
That night
Every song was punctuated by his verbal vim and verve
Really unsurprising that it all struck an astral nerve

Did I see that beautiful young face in a kiddy car
Evincing the public that he'd someday be a star
Nearer I saw a lovely young girl
Nobly stand
In shiny satin with an artful goblet in hand
So can eveyone see that the diamonds I wear

Bought at New Cross Boots though they still get the stares
Look at Arty power chords in his black Cardin shades
And Des's arm encircles my waist but(he's so not depraved)
Now get in there and give him your gift
Do I have to hunt Pete like a shark in the after hours drift?
Folks just want to jest- one gal wants an autograph on the chest
Okay I think where do I fit in, over by the bar, is that Bobby Pridden?
Robeson's bio is what I plan to pathetically give away
Distinguished with the most pretentious words I could ever say

The musical hero. The Alpha male, the Fabian Socialist who also sails
Okay so I circle this spirit because I had to just had to try
What if I never met him before I up and die?
Now the girl in satin has a crisp voice I knew
So many life times ago when in Essex I flew
Hearing it makes me suddenly brave
Enough to go and shake the hand of her knave
Now flash bulbs go off and the kids are alright
Did I tell you what a wonderful time I had that night, hey hey good rockin at midnight

Amanda,

Your prose is too much for my circuits. I could never have imagined a girl (nay, a bomb) who gets PT more profoundly than I ever did, even in my most derangedly romantic twenties. It's clear that he is your muse, and for that I am grateful. Did that make sense?

Hmmmm...you're so clever, so cool and-hey you figured it out!
There is a poem at the end of Through the Looking Glass, which is an acrostic. Reading downward, taking the first letter of each line, spells out Alice's name in full. The poem has no title in Through the Looking Glass but is usually refered to by its first line, "A Boat Beneath a Sunny Sky"...that's where I got the idea.

Hi Amanda,

Damn, you were at the La Jolla shows? I (naturally) have the cds and I just love those shows & the way Pete just keeps on talking endlessly. I seem to have a thing for verbose Englishmen! There's Pete, my best friend is English and very verbose, and I love the verbose Brith comedy. Honestly speaking if I ever met Pete I'd probably be nervous like hell

Thank you very much for your comment . I do not really deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with Beyond The Fringe though!

Hi Amanda!

Thanks for visiting my blog earlier, I really appreciate it! I love your blog, such interesting reads. I for sure have to bookmark it. I am a huge fan of Rachels, after seeing Kept. I wrote her an email, and she was very sweet. I have been visiting her blog, but never able to attend a chat:(...Anyway, sorry this message is so long..I will for sure keep checking back here!

Take Care!

Hey I was there! Did you go to both shows? I went to the first one.
Didn't cough up the $500 to meet him though...I was lucky enough to get the 3rd row seats.
Did you go gaga over his film or what? It was sad though, he looked like a wounded birdman at the end...
I love your poem! Can you tell us how your meeting went in prose though? ;)

Hey read that site you posted over on mine. Which column do you write for on it? I love fashion but not much on the gossip train. OK maybe a little giggle hehehe. But not really.

So do a playboy shot for me...my husband would hit the roof! LOL
