Oh please, we should all be so lucky have Pete Townshend's abs at any age. Having had my beautiful son six months ago I still have 18 more pounds to go before I'm back at what I once thought was "big."

I now know what "big" is. Pete's stomach is NOT big!

My tum helped build a Super baby who is almost 25 pounds at six months and his doctor says he's 100% perfect for his height, trim even. Trim is Pete's stomach. Not many straight people over 30 have one that flat!

It's a second job to get my figure back but I'm still not looking as bad as these amorphous and insipid, faceless muffin Jabba the Hut people slagging Pete's awesome wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl. A few of these detractors I deigned to google and saw from their photos that they should be the last people to ever be making value judgements about appearance! Crikey, more than a few were doing a far impression of the Michelin man.

That is NOT a flabby stomach at all on Pete Townshend, he is in great shape. Most of the idiots who were talking shite about him predictably are not.

Right on Amanda!

I though it was stupid that people were making such an issue out of one little glimpse of a person's stomach. I didn't hear anything about it when Pete Townshend showed it during the CFNY set The Who did.

Re. Pete : Da dude´s in gr8 shape & what´s wrong wid a li´l belly? After all twas Superbowl,no... But seriously ; sumone really oughta have a man-to-man talk wid Pete´s TAILOR.):Pete´s suit didn´t exactly have da famous Savile Row fit & poor Pete would´ve been much much better off wearin da ole jump suit of his Woodstock days...

@Par: 18 pounds on me is like hell on earth but considering I gained fifty when pregnant I'm doing a very good job. I don't think reviving the boiler suit for PT would have worked. I think people like to look forward! As for the "Saville row" look? "Suits and ties, they just don't seem to harmonize!"

Am confident a few thousand sit-ups +push-ups will cure yer 18 pounds prob , Amanda . But ye gotta do da dem push-ups right! Can´t just push up yer butt .Gotta be parallel wid da ground, see!/ As for ´lookin forward´ , when it cums to pop/rock , dat´s like lookin into a fuckin abyss ,tis all Lady Gaga ,like...):

sit ups done correctly yes, but pushups do women built like me little favours since they make your abs work so hard while you balance on your hands that you end up squarish and over built. Chest machines are better because I isolate the muscles without using the abs/obliques as much. Push ups are for men and consequently there is such a thing as working the much ballyhooed and misunderstood "core" too much. Most of my programme is cardio and really limiting food anyway not toning, as the muscles are still there.

Dough-boy! (sexy doughboy) (I'm with Grace, I didn't mind)

I think I overbuilt my core a few years ago. Then I got lazy and suddenly quit all exercising a couple of years ago .. and as a result (I think)I NOW suddenly have a maddening, stubborn lower back problem. First time in my life. Plus a lot of extra DOUGH on my middle.

Good luck with your 18 pounds, Amanda. I think I'm at about 20.

It's crazy but when I had really strong stomach muscles from teaching and training I found that once I stopped (due to an ankle injury) that the mid section the first place I gained. It freaked me out because I'd always gained in the hips when my weight fluctuated which is preferable and healthier. I reserved the effects pronto but after that no more heavy core work!

That's INTERESTING what you say about your midsection gaining after building up your core. Same here! You've helped crystallize this for me!

For the first time in my life (a few years ago), I had sculpted a fairly nice waist! (for me, anyway ;-)). NOW, it's like this huge thing. And I DO blame it on all that former core work. (plus a recent hormone shift, I think ...)

When I was little I always remember hearing the old fallacy (?) that when one (say) built up muscles and then quit or got lazy or old, one got flabby. ("muscle turning to flab") And I think that's what happened to me!! It's more than just gaining weight. I don't think it would feel this huge if I hadn't built up my core so drastically a few years ago.

I don't know how to fix it.

Too much pilates! :-)

I tried getting back on the yoga track last fall but couldn't do it. Too much sciatica. I need for that to clear up first. Could take months.

Christian the Lion -- I have to admit, I didn't know about him until these past couple of years. Of course I knew the Elsa story, etc. from childhood. (were they related?)

I bought my daughter the C the L book when I was in London last May. :-)

@Lucy I know! I'm going to post a workout video explaining how I was able to get my waist back. What I believe happens is that core work builds up the obliques (the waist) so much that physically and visually it blends into the hips. plus you ALWAYS work the abs when you work the thighs and glutes which is also not good. the glutes and thighs need to be isolated separately without the constant tandem ab and core work focus. Actually just google Joseph Pilates himself and look at his massive square abs or google many pilates instructors. It's weird they are lean but they have slight to no hip to waist ratios.
Yes, women have to be careful. I found Gyrotonics and Gyrokenisis to be the most effective and waist whittling. It is FABULOUS! The later is a yoga/mat work you'll enjoy-don't do Astanga/down dog up dog style yoga, planks or kick boxing! Keep me posted and I'll post updates too.

Thanks Amanda, for the excellent advice. I'll look up Gyrotonics, etc. (never heard of it)... sounds GOOD! Never noticed that about the pilates physique. (oops!) Would've helped to know this beforehand. :-)

Barring that, how about dancing? I bet that helps. Especially belly dancing :-))

P.S. isn't it ironic today's Mardi Gras? (for a few more hours anyway......) :-) (I ate too many paczki today .. and too much king cake last week while watching the SB)

Oh NO ONE sank more money into pilates than me. I think it's great for feet, ankles, legs and arms and pelvic floor but ironically NOT the core! dancing is fabulous-all dancing. You had a Bean Feast? The cake with the bean in it from 12th night? Very cool!

Still don't own a computer so I can't stay long and leave a deeper answer to this subject (sigh). But you are beautiful the way you are Amanda and I didn't catch the Superbowl show, but in regards to Pete, no comment (in a good way!). Don't worry about your baby gain, I gained 70 lbs with both babies and eventually lost it all.

I looked, and Gyrotonics appears to be TORTURE! But I'm sure it's very EFFECTIVE torture. ;-)
